The Bergenfield Health Department will be launching a NEW adult vaccination program for 2012. Vaccines that will be immediately available will include Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, combination Hep A/ Hep B, Meningococcal, Pneumonia, and combination Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis. If there is another vaccination that you need, please contact us so that we can see if it is available through the State of NJ.

The fee schedule for these vaccines is as follows:
1. $16.00 per vaccination for single dose injections.
2. $11.00 per additional vaccination for multi-dose vaccines requiring a series of injections.
3. $12.00 per vaccination for single dose intranasal or oral vaccine.
4. $8.00 per vaccination for each additional multi-dose intranasal or oral dose vaccine.

The Bergenfield Health Department will conduct its annual rabies vaccination program for cats and dogs on Wednesday, January 11th, 4PM to 6PM and Wednesday, January 18th, 6PM to 8PM at the Department of Public Works Garage. The DPW garage is located directly behind the Bergenfield Borough Hall at 198 North Washington Avenue. All dogs must be leashed and cats should be in an approved animal carrier for their safety.

Dogs and cats may be vaccinated as early as three months of age and MUST be re-vaccinated within one year after the animal’s initial immunization. After that, the animal is required to be revaccinated every three years.

For your convenience, dog and cat licenses will be renewed at the rabies program as well. Your animal license CANNOT be renewed if your rabies shot expires in 2012 and it will not harm the animal to have it done early at these programs.

If you miss the program, Bergenfield contracts with the Bergen County Animal Shelter in Teterboro (201-646-3200) to give free rabies shots to dogs and cats. Please call them for times and dates (typically twice a month).

The Bergenfield Health Department will be offering two influenza Vaccination Clinics for Bergenfield residents 18 years of age or older. For those who have Medicare as their primary health insurance (i.e. no supplementary coverage) the vaccination is free, for all others there is a $15.00 fee.

The Bergenfield and Englewood Health Departments are currently planning a joint-command, immunization exercise at the McCloud Elementary School in Englewood on Saturday, June 4th from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. A rain date has been scheduled for June 5th. The objective is to demonstrate the ability to set up and safely administer vaccine to the general population, during an emergency situation, using a drive-through clinic model as the point of distribution (POD).  This effort has been made possible through a mini grant awarded by the New Jersey Health Officers Association.

UPDATE 12/28/09: THIS CLINIC IS FULL - CHECK BACK SOON FOR INFORMATION ON OTHER CLINICS
The Bergenfield Health Department is having a FREE H1N1 clinic on Thursday, January 7, 2010 for all age groups including those with chronic medical conditions such as diabetes. We are requesting a doctor's note from pregnant women. This is the injectable (dead virus) formulation of the vaccine.

The program will be conducted on the second floor of the Bergenfield Borough Hall in the "Community Health Center" and is by APPOINTMENT ONLY. To make an appointment please call 201-387-4055 Ext 5.

As in the past, if the clinic fills up, we will continue to schedule future clinics until there is no demand.

       The next two FREE swine flu mist programs will be conducted for the following age groups and dates: Children ages 2 - 9 years on Saturday, November 21, from 9:00am-11:30am, and Tuesday, December 1, from 9:00am-11:30am.  Both programs will be on the second floor of the Bergenfield Borough Hall and are by appointment only. It is recommended that children in the 2-9 age group be revaccinated after four weeks to ensure full immunity. Anyone with a chronic medical condition such as asthma must wait for the injectable formulation of the swine flu immunization.

       We will continue to order both formulations and schedule programs as rapidly as we receive the vaccine. This will continue until there is no demand. The Bergenfield Health Department is offering the seasonal influenza vaccine to all Bergenfield residents ages 18 years and older. The programs will be held in the Community Health Room on the second floor of the Borough Hall, 198 N. Washington Avenue, on the following dates:

• Tuesday, October 27, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.
• Tuesday, November 10, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

A separate flu vaccination program will be held at the Senior Center at Brookside Gardens, 293 Murray Hill Terrace, on Thursday, November 12 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

The seasonal influenza vaccine is strongly recommended yearly for persons 50 years and older.

This vaccine is also recommended for adults who have chronic diseases such as anemia, diabetes, health disease, kidney disease, and asthma. Pregnant women will need a doctor's note in order to receive a vaccine.

In addition, a public health nurse will administer the seasonal flu vaccine in a resident's home if they are homebound. This is on a limited basis for the homebound by appointment only.

There will be a $15 charge for the vaccine for people 18 years and older. Medicare will not be accepted.

On Sunday, September 6, 2009, a cat attacked and bit four residents of Bergenfield at the Maharajah Association Picnic at Memorial Park. The cat was euthanized and tested positive for rabies. The cat was described as "small, white, and had a cut on its face".

The Bergenfield Health Department requests that any person that was scratched or bitten by a cat matching that description in or about the Memorial Park area from Thursday, August 27th to Sunday, September 6th, seek medical attention immediately. Further, any cat or dog that was scratched or bitten by this cat must be brought to a Veterinarian for a rabies booster. All cats and dogs in Bergenfield must already be licensed and have a valid rabies shot.
